DMIBPA’s New Website is Up and Running!

Check out our new format at dmibpa.org.  We hope you agree that it’s easy to read and to find the information you want.

Parents — be an IB Exam Proctor this May!

One way to support the IB program at Desert Mountain is to volunteer as a proctor for IB exams.  The program has two exams times: Jan/Feb for the English commentaries and May for the written IB exams.

Proctors duties are usually limited to timing a student’s prep session (oral exams) and helping distribute/collect test papers or escorting students to the restroom during written exams.

Parents cannot proctor exams that their students are taking…this makes Freshman and Sophomore parents very important to this process!  It also gives them the chance to see what’s involved in the exams before their students reach that point.

To volunteer as a proctor, you need to fill out an application with the school district.  SUSD has a new, online procedure to become a volunteer.  (Note:  if you are already registered as a volunteer you do not need to re-register.  Registrations last for 3 years.)  A link to the online form and detailed instructions can be found on our website: dmibpa.org, then click on “Get Involved”.

Board Members needed for 2014-15

Did you know that the best way to learn the ins-and-outs of the IB program is to sit on the IBPA Board?  For next year we are looking for parents to do the following jobs:

Fundraising

Coordinates the fall Direct Appeal and the 3 Barnes & Noble book fairs each year.  Attends monthly Board meeting.  This position is currently held by a parent of a senior student, and she would like to have her successor learn how to do the book fairs by assisting with the Spring event.

Liaison

Point of communication between IBPA Board and the school administration and staff, along with the IBPA Chair.  Attends monthly Board meeting.  This position is currently held by a parent of a senior student who is happy to share her vast knowledge of the IB program and its history.

Proctoring Coordinator

Signs up volunteer parents to proctor IB exams.  Creates schedule of exams, sends reminders and instructions to parent volunteers.  Actively recruits new parents to proctor.

Members-At-Large

Duties assigned as necessary, usually to assist other Board members in their tasks. Many new Board members start here to “learn the ropes.”

If you are interested in volunteering please contact Rosanne Zarmer, [email protected].

Junior Student Volunteers Needed for Recognition Event

The Junior class acts as the hosts for this special event.  Student volunteers are needed to help seat VIP guests, hand out programs, speak to the Sophomore class and hand out their commitment gifts.  The volunteers will be required to attend a rehearsal on Wednesday, May 7, for one hour right after school (early release day), and to be at the school on Sunday, May 18, no later than 1:00 pm for the duration of the event.  This is a nice opportunity for friends to work together!  To volunteer please contact Patty Carlson, [email protected], or Gladys Scott, [email protected].

Save Palomino Library

Palomino Library may be closed PERMANENTLY in response to the current budget situation.  This “solution” to the City’s financial issues would close the most efficient and cost-effective branch of the Scottsdale Public Library system.  Please take 30 seconds to email the City Council about this very important issue.  Every email is counted (sample provided below).

Reasons why Palomino needs your support:

1.  If Palomino becomes a high school library, it will close between 2:30 and 3 p.m. and would allow no access for the public, including elementary and middle school students.

2.  Palomino is the smallest library but it is the third most-used library of the five Scottsdale libraries.

3.  Palomino is the most cost-effective library being operated by the city today.  SUSD contributes significantly towards Palomino’s total operational expenses.

4.  Palomino was designed as a dual-function public/high school library.  Shared-use facilities are a positive budget solution, demonstrating fiscal and environmental efficiency.

5.  With the advent of ebooks and other digitized media, large buildings with multitudes of books and traditional print media are not necessarily the library of the future.  Small libraries like Palomino, which operate on a more efficient and wired scale, are more in sync with the future.

6.  Neighborhoods around Palomino are being unfairly targeted for cuts.

Send an email message TODAY to [email protected]. Use the following text or create your own message of support:

I respectfully request Scottsdale City Council to direct Library management to look for budget cuts elsewhere and keep Palomino Public Library open.
